Cahors & Lot Valley

Cahors, situated on the river Lot spanned by the beautiful 14th century Pont Valentré, the only fortified bridge with three towers in the world, and is 15km from Catus. Cahors is known for its deep ruby red wines and the vineyard trail can be followed west of Cahors along the Lot valley to the medieval town of Puy l'Eveque and to the east Saint Cirq Lapopie, high above the Lot valley. Rocamadour, with its ramparts and houses clinging to a rock face above the Alzou gorge, is 45km north.

Pont Valentré Cahors

The Pont Valentré spans the Lot river in Cahors. This beautiful 14th-century bridge is the symbol of the city of Cahors and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sometimes known as the Pont du Diable, the bridge of the devil, it is the only fortified bridge with three towers in the world.

Saint Cirq Lapopie

Saint Cirq Lapopie

Sitting high above the Lot valley is Saint Cirq Lapopie. This beautiful village has a maze of lanes filled with interesting craft shops, galleries and restaurants and is filled with attractive half-timbered stone houses and has been voted “Le village préféré des Français”. There are many stunning views of the Lot valley far below.

Rocamadour

Rocamadour

The village of Rocamadour is the most popular site in the Lot. The château and ramparts are at the highest point, with the sanctuary, churches and museum on the next level down, and nestling just above the Alzou Gorge are the village houses, clinging on to the side of the rocks below.

Gouffre de Padirac & Grotte du Pech Merle

The Gouffre de Padirac is a chasm 103 metres deep, of great geological interest. It has a subterranean river, with underground lakes, huge stalactites and galleries the largest of these is the Salle du Grand Dôme with its 94 metre high vault.

The prehistoric cave Grotte du Pech Merle in Cabrerets near Saint Cirq Lapopie, has an amazing collection of prehistoric paintings and engravings in an impressive geological setting.
